This article examines The Fog Walker (2020), a full-length novel by the Chinese
writer Lu Nei, arguing that the text maps a portrait of China from 1998 to 2008
through its focus on “character mobility” and “Societal Incidents.” Departing from
existing studies that foreground the dynamics of urban–rural migration, this study
analyzes the pers+pective of warehouse keepers as mobile subjects and witnesses, as
well as informal mechanisms such as forged documents and “Societal alliance.” These
elements illuminate the strategies and existential conditions of ordinary people who
remained outside formal institutions during a decade of rapid national transformation
and increasing regulatory control.
Drawing on Benedict Anderson’s theory of imagined communities, the article
contends that The Fog Walker constructs a people-centered socio-spatial landscape
marked by uncertainty and tensions of survival, off ering a vantage point distinct from
the state’s narrative of progress. It further argues that the novel’s “total rhetoric” and
its dual narrative perspectives enable the work to move beyond socialist realism,
endowing it with an allegorical signifi cance that speaks to the spirit of its era.
