The Tongcheng School represents a major literary movement in Qing Dynasty
literature. Traditionally, it has been viewed that the founder, Fang Bao, focused on
establishing theories of prose rather than excelling in poetry. Contemporaries of
Fang Bao, Fang Shiju gained renown for his poetry and authored treatises included
in Continuation of Qing Poetry Discussions. Fang Shiju integrated the venerable
reverence for Du Fu with Han Yu's poetry, pioneering the early admiration for both
Du Fu and Han Yu in Tongcheng poetics. Currently, there is limited discourse on
them.
Based on Fang Shiju’s Lan Cong Discussions on Poetry and related works, it
is evident through textual analysis that Fang Shiju’s core ideology was rooted in
venerating the Tang poetry and Du Fu. He elevated their position the Du Fu and
Han Yu, and also took interest in Meng Jiao, Lu Tong, and Li He due to Han Yu’s
influence. Fang Shiju’s formation was shaped during his youth, and influenced by
the times and environment. Fang Shiju also valued Han Yu, influenced in part by

the teachings of Zhu Yizun. Furthermore, Fang Shiju’s emphasis on the Du Fu and
Han Yu, elevating the five ancient poets and regulated verse, establishes him as a
pioneer in shaping Tongcheng poetics. Thus, we could understand more of the early
Tongcheng School’s poetic and the connections with the later poetics.
